NEMA AC power plug connector standards are used for mains electricity in North America and other countries that conform to the standards set by the U.S. National Electrical Manufacturers Association. All NEMA 5 devices feature three prongs (hot, neutral and ground) rated for 125 V maximum.
NEMA 5–20R receptacles may have a T-shaped neutral hole designed to accept both 5–15P and 5–20P plugs. This is the most popular design for public electric car charging stations and is also featured on many home charging units. A majority of custom made plugin hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV’s) such as converted Toyota Prius are designed to work with NEMA 5. Tesla Roadsters also have an adapter for the NEMA standard.
